Welcome to Art!
Check out our Junk Flag Mosaic!
This 48" x 96" flag was made from red, white and blue bottle tops collected by the Steelton-Highspire Elementary School students, families and staff.
During the 2010-2012 school year, we collected hundreds of red, white and blue bottle tops. Then in April, in conjunction with Earth Day, students in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade began gluing the bottle tops onto the background.
Art Club students in 4th through 6th grades created patriotic ceramic stars to be added into the blue section of the flag. (There are 50 stars on the American flag, representing the 50 states. However, our flag only has 30 stars. We made 50, but we decided to only add 30 because 50 looked too crowded. When an artist makes a choice like that, it is called "creative license"!)
I would like to add a special thank you to the employees of the Hershey Recycling Center, for donating red bottle caps to help us finish the flag!
I am proud of all the effort students and staff put into collecting and creating to make this beautiful and earth-friendly work of art!
I can't wait to create!
