100 Book Challenge
Every year, 100 Book Challenge is a favorite of students! The books your son or daughter reads during 100 Book Challenge are at his/her independent level. In other words, students should be able to read these books smoothly, quickly, and with expression. All but one or two words on a page should be read without hesitation and students should use the word attack strategies presented in class to figure out unknown words.
In class, most students read 15 minutes every day. The logsheet is filled out and a teacher will sign as the "reading coach." When your child reads at home please be sure you are signing the "reading coach" column. (Thank you!) If the logsheet is not signed your child will miss recess and read in the work room.
Your child will bring 5 books home every day. I track the number of books taken home and the number of books returned daily. (However, I do not track the titles of the books, just the number of books taken from the classroom.) If a book is lost the child will not take any additional books home until the book is returned or $5.00 is paid to cover the cost of replacing the missing book.
Students pick what books they want to read. If they bring home the same book more than once, don't worry! Rereading actually helps improve reading ability. Also, over the years many parents have expressed concern that the books their child bring home are too easy. Remember, reading 100 Book Challenge books should be fun, quick, and easy!
100 Book Challenge levels are organized by color. The colors are: YY (yellow/yellow or 2 yellow), G (green), GG (green/green or 2 green), B (blue), BB (blue/blue or 2 blue), R (red), RR (red/red or 2 red), Wt (white), Bk (black), and Or (orange).
