What is Google Workspace for Education?

Google Accounts for Education are a suite of cloud web-based applications that allow for collaboration between students and staff at any time and any place that has internet access.

What are the educational benefits of Google Accounts for Education?

Students will be able to create, share and edit files in Google Drive (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.); will be able to communicate with teachers/peers through Gmail.

What apps are part of my child’s Google Apps for Education?

Students will have access to a suite of cloud web-based programs that provide word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, calendar, research, and other collaboration tools.

Students will also be given a SHSDROLLERS.ORG Gmail account that only works within our organization that can be used for collaboration and communication. This Gmail account will provide access to certain educationally-based subscriptions.

How can my child access his/her Google Account?

As a cloud-based suite, Google Accounts will be available at school and at home via the Internet. Students will log in using their email and unique password. There is a link on the school website for Google Apps

Is my child’s Google Workspace for Education Account secure?

The safety and security of our students and their accounts are very important to the district. Therefore, these Google Accounts will reside on an SHSD Schools Internet domain owned by the District and is intended for educational use only. Students will only be able to collaborate and communicate with other students and staff whose accounts are within this domain. These accounts comply with legal requirements for safety and security, such as the Child Internet Protection Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The district is also sets restrictions on the educational apps that will be utilized as a part of each child’s Google Account. These restrictions dictate what information may be shared and who may access information, amongst other guidelines. Please also keep in mind that these accounts and all content contained within the accounts are the property of SHSD and may be reviewed at any time. Any violation of School Board policy using Google Accounts will be addressed as outlined in the appropriate policies.

Can I opt my child out of Google Workspace for Education?

Google Accounts have many educational benefits. However, after discussing and reviewing these benefits, if you still feel it is best for your child to not have a Google Account, you may contact your child’s teacher and opt out of using Google Workspace for Education for the year.

How will we educate our students about Google Workspace for Education?

During the first few weeks of school, students will review the expectations and procedures for accessing their Google accounts. Teachers will also provide students with their individual login information to access their accounts. In addition, we will continue to educate students on digital citizenship through homeroom meetings and building assemblies.

What grade levels will receive Google Accounts for Education?

Students in grades 2-12 will receive Google Accounts for Education starting in the 2017-2018 school year.

Chromebook Device Frequently Asked QuestionsCan my child take their Chromebook home?

Yes, students in grades in grades 9-12 may start taking theirs home from the first day they receive their Chromebook. If a student takes their Chromebook home they are required to charge them every night and bring them back to school each day fully charged.

Students in grades K-6 and grades 7-8 may NOT take their devices home. The classroom teacher may allow students to take the device home for a special project at the classroom teacher’s discretion but nor for an extended period of time. (During the 2019-2020 COVID 19 Pandemic students in grades 2-6 are also issued take-home devices.)

What if my child breaks the assigned Chromebook or loses a part to the Chromebook or loses the Chromebook itself?

The students are held responsible for all damage to the Chromebook. If they do damage the Chromebook they are to notify their teacher and then take it to the library for repair. Any repair costs incurred will be billed to the student. If they lose the Chromebook they will be charged for the full price.

Will the Chromebook work at home if we do not have internet access?

Yes, the Chromebook requires an internet connection for most functions to work but some functions will work offline, for example, Google Docs and Google Sheet’s, etc... Eligible families can also apply for a low-cost internet program through Comcast Internet Essentials program. If my child leaves the school district can we keep the Chromebook?

No, if you drop enrollment from the school district you must return the Chromebook before your child leaves.

Can we keep the Chromebooks over the summer?

No, all Chromebook devices and accessories must be turned into the Homeroom teacher by the end of the day on the last day of school for the current school year.
